Adult Programming Policy

Thank you for your interest in presenting a program for the patrons of East Brunswick Public Library. The Library welcomes program proposals and recommendations from the public, qualified speakers, authors and performes.

About Library Adult Programming

The Library's adult programs are planned to meet the informal, educational, health, cultural and lifelong-learning interest and needs of adult residents. Proposals are sough for:

  • General adult programming (concerts, lectures, workshops, documentaries, presentations, presentations, events, author talks)
  • Health programs through The Library's Just For The Health of It initiative

All the above programs are offered free to the public, except for an occasional materials fee for a hands-on workshop.

In addition, adult programming includes:

  • Year-round film series (popular, international and fine films)
  • General computer courses (through the IT department)
  • English Conversation Groups (through adult services)
  • Book Discussion Group (through adult services)
  • Exhibits (thorugh adult programming)
  • Workshops on business topics, job seeking and college planning through The Library's Business Resource Center Business, organizations and individuals may also rent meeting rooms for non-Library-sponsored workshops, lectures, events or meetings through The Library's Business Resource Center

Criteria For Programming

The programming committee evaluates each proposal based on how it supports The Library's mission, the potential interest and benefit to Library customers, the expertise and presentation skills of the speaker, budgetary considerations and how the program fits into ongoing and short-term goals and initiatives. We welcome partnerships with the local business community, health providers, educators, community organizations, community leaders, authors and performers.

Please be advised that The Library has a "no-sell" policy; presenters may make business cards or literature available to attendees, but may not sell, take orders or collect contact information from attendees. The only exceptions to this policy are authors and performing artists, who may sell their books and CDs.

Usually, programs are an hour long with extra time for Q-and-A, scheduled on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday evenings at 7:00pm or at 1:00pm on weekdays. Fairs, festivals and concerts usually are held on Sunday afternoons at 2:00, and may run up to two hours. We are closed summer Sundays, Memorial Day through Labor Day. Specific permission must be obtained from the Assistant Director of The Library if you wish to serve refreshments.

Presentation Venue and A/V Equipment

The Library has three meeting rooms with retractable dividing walls. Any two rooms or all three can be combined. Room1 has low stage, a screen and an upright piano. Room 3 has a screen and there is a portable screen available for Room 2. The Library can provide a podium, tables, chairs, DVD player, VCR, easel, whiteboard, microphone and/or computer projector. Wifi is available but not always entirely reliable, so when possible, try to incorporate web or video clips into the computer presentation or burn them to a DVD. PRESENTERS MUST BRING THEIR OWN LAPTOPS if they need a computer for their presentation. Nothing may be taped to walls of the rooms. Room and set-up specifications

Submitting Proposals

Use the Adult Proposal Submission Form to propose a program. Your information will become part of our resource database that we rely on when planning our programs and topics. You will only be contacted if we are interested in pursuing your topic. Our planning cycle begins as early as a year prior to the date of the program and not all topics are covered each year. It is, therefore, not usual for The Library to contact a speaker a year or two after the initial receipt of a proposal.

Adult Exhibit Proposal Policies

Thank you for your interest in exhibiting at the East Brunswick Public Library. The Library welcomes exhibits proposals and recommendations from artists, community groups, collectors, etc. If you move or change your contact information, please call 732-390-6773 or e-mail sfilippone@ebpl.org with updates. If The Library cannot reach you beforehand, the space may go to someone else. PLEASE NOTE: In accordance with community values, please refrain from emphasizing undraped human forms in your exhibit.

About Library Exhibits

The Library's exhibit policy provides for displays of an artistic, educational, cultural, civic or charitable nature. Exhibits may also highlight materials from the Library's collection or publicize Library services, collections or activities. Examples of past exhibits include: Banned Book Week, Black History Month, vintage radios, photography, quilts, paintings, drawings, ceramics, veteran memorabilia, etc. Exhibit proposals are sought for:

  • Wall exhibits (2 adjacent walls and optional mini-wall)
  • Display cases (3 adjacent glass-enclosed cases, each with a base and two adjustrable shelves; this is designed to be used as a single exhibit)

Criteria For Exhibits

The programming committee evaluates each proposal based on how it supports The Library's mission, the potential interest to Library customers, the quality and professionalism of the exhibit/artwork and how the exhibits fits into ongoing and short-term Library goals and initiatives. Ideally, each calendar year will feature a wide variety of exhibit types and artistic media. Preference is given to local artist, collectors and organizations.

Exhibits are generally scheduled for an entire month, beginning on the first day of the month and ending on the last day of the month, unless special arrangements are made in advance. The Library is closed summer Sundays from Memorial Day through Labor Day, inclusive. If June1 or July 1 or August 1 falls on a Sunday, put-up is the 2nd of the month. Exhibitors are responsible for setting up and taking down their own exhibits at a time to be determined by the exhibitor and The Library representative. Please remoce your exhibit on its last scheduled day, unless The Library is closed that day. If so, removal should take place the day before.

Works of art should be hung on The Library's gallery rods in areas where there are metal molding strips. No tacks, nails or FunTack may be used on any wall. It is suggested that exhibitors visit The Library and examine the exhibit space if they are not already familiar with it. The Library does not carry special insurance for exhibits. Exhibitors are adviced to check their homeowner's insurance policy to ascertain the extent of their off-premisses coverage. Showcase exhibitors should get the keys from the Circulation desk and return them after installation. The showcases are locked at all times. Please make available to The Library representative at the time of installation a list of all pieces in your exhibit with individual valuations.

The Library is a nonprofit institution. If you offer commercial services, please do not so post in your exhibit; you may, however, include a small, professionally-prepared sign indicating contact info "for more information". If the items in your exhibit are for sale, please give a master price list to The Library representative and the information Services desk, but DO NOT POST PRICES. All prospective customers will be referred directly to you. No items should be removed until the close of the exhibit.
